These two services (and lots of others) allow you to back up your data online. Just backing your data up to a CD (or another place on your hard drive) isn't enough. What if the CD gets scratched? Your house burns down? The hard drive completely fails?
I managed to destroy all of my user profile last week, and the service I use (one of the two above - both are about the same cost and work on Win, Mac, and Linux) let me recover a large amount of my data.
