In-n-Out Java (Review)

I have a couple of reviews that I've been meaning to post, but for once I'm actually energized enough to write it.

It might have something to do with the caffeine.

I've seen In-N-Out Java (in Kettering, just over the border from Dayton by Smithville) several times, often when going to Ritter's. I wish I'd stopped by sooner. Sometimes I just want the coffee without the "experience", but in this particular part of town you'd have to drive to the Starbucks in Oakwood or to the Blue Moose in the Greene. In-N-Out Java provides the coffee at a reasonable price, quick service, and friendly folks. The drive-through setup makes it perfect for when you aren't wanting the atmosphere but want the coffee. I grabbed a drink before running on an errand; after I was done I grabbed another drink on the way home. Yummy.

They serve Boston Stoker coffees, for those who are particular about such things.

One drawback: You'll need cash. Luckily, there's an ATM right across the street. Overall, a yummy independent coffeeshop for when you want the coffee and not the fuss.

Dayton LGBT Film Festival - 25-27 September

The Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival will be September 25-27 at THE NEON in downtown Dayton. Individual tickets are $8.

The Downtown Priority Board will once again partner with THE NEON – with sponsorships from several local businesses and individuals - to host The 4th Annual Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival during the last weekend of September.

A story about the lives and loves of Salvador Dalí, Federico García Lorca and Luis Buñuel - LITTLE ASHES, starring TWILIGHT’s Robert Pattinson – will open the festival on Friday, September 25 at 7:00. This film, sponsored by Square One Salon & Spa, is expected to be a big draw for the festival.

At 9:30 on that same evening, Club Masque will sponsor a screening of THE BIG GAY MUSICAL – directed by Casper Andreas and starring many performers from the Great White Way. Masque will then host the after-party directly following the screening…to which audience members will gain free admission. THE BIG GAY MUSICAL tells the story of Paul and Eddie – who have just begun previews for the new Off-Broadway musical ADAM AND STEVE: JUST THE WAY GOD MADE ‘EM. Their lives strangely mirror the characters they are playing - as Paul is looking for the perfect man and Eddie is struggling with how to come out to his religious parents. In the middle of scantly clad tap dancing angels, a retelling of Genesis, and singing televangelists is a movie with a big heart. The actors in THE BIG GAY MUSICAL have performed in nearly 50 Broadway musicals! The short film DINX - which is sure to be an audience favorite - will precede the film.

You can see a nice synopsis and layout of the program at their Myspace page, and find lots more information at their homepage http://www.daytonlgbt.com

Middfest International - 2-4 October

[Shamelessly cut-n-pasted from an e-mail forwarded to me.]

Middfest International is a premier cultural event that celebrates a different country each year through a wide range of programs in the arts, culture and business. It is always the first weekend in October and takes place around the Middletown City Building on Donham Plaza in Middletown. This year the featured country is Indonesia and is Oct 2-4. There is constant live entertainment on several stages by local and regional performers, singers and dancers from Indonesia and will also host Dayton's much-loved Rhythm in Shoes during their final performance season. The International Food Court offers visitors foods
from South America to the Middle East to Asia, and the World Bazaar will also be stocked with souvenirs from Indonesia and the rest of the world.

All floors of the Middletown City Building will be devoted to some aspect of the culture of Indonesia through exhibits of artwork, demonstrations of traditional crafts, conversations and films. The Science and History Exhibits will study how exotic spices and unique geography helped build lucrative trade routes and shape the
nation. Puppetry, a distinguishing characteristic of Indonesian cultural arts, will be explored through performances of traditional shadow and rod puppets and the unique theatrical offerings of Das Puppenspiel in the Puppet Center. Visitors will also get to hear the traditional sounds of a full Gamelan orchestra, a traditional Javanese orchestra made up of gongs, chimes, bamboo xylophones, strings and
drums. Ohio University is lending their expertise to the Religion Exhibit, which will explore Indonesia's relationship with Islam and its unique acceptance of a number of other religions.

Children are invited to participate in Super Saturday, a special offering designed for youngsters to view exhibits and see performances on the Saturday morning of Middfest weekend prior to the event's opening to the general public. Youth Park will have a special Rain Forest theme this year to emphasize Indonesia's unique ecology. The park is open throughout the weekend with special children's activities, games and performances.

The Great American Trailer Park Musical - 18 Sep - 27 Sep

The Beavercreek Community Theatre's production of The Great American Trailer Park Musical starts tonight! Tonight's show is already sold out, and the rest of the dates are going quick! (No, really. Go look yourself.)

There’s a new tenant at Armadillo Acres, and she is wreaking havoc all over North Florida’s most exclusive Manufactured housing community. When Pippi, the stripper on the run from an ex-boyfriend, comes between the Dr. Phil loving, agoraphobic Jeannie and her tollbooth collector husband, the storms begin to brew.

Updayton Candidates Forum - 1 Oct 2009 @ 1800

This is forwarded from Lilah Findley; this seems like an AWESOME project. I especially like the realization that all residents of the Dayton area have a stake in what happens in Dayton proper. The Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is much larger than the city limits - and all the parts of that MSA effect one another.

Over the past year it’s been the mission of updayton to give young creatives a louder voice in our region. On October 1st, 6pm at c{space (20 N Jefferson) young creatives will have the chance to talk to Dayton’s leaders directly at our first-ever updayton Candidates Forum. See the flyer at www.updayton.com.

At the Young Creatives Summit you told us about the importance of a strong urban core – so on October 1st we’ll welcome the candidates for Dayton Mayor and the City Commission to talk about issues important to our demographic. All are welcome to attend, whether you’re a City of Dayton resident or not. We all have a stake in the future of our center city. Learn more about the event and submit a question for the candidates at http://tinyurl.com/lfv9ed. Please RSVP to me at Generated by TxtNinja.com. Let’s build a crowd and show Dayton’s leadership that we care about the direction of our city.

In the mean time, check out the September updayton newsletter at http://tinyurl.com/ltb7md

Highlighting cool people doing cool things in Dayton

Brought to my attention from the Dayton MostMetro blog:

One local grassroots group, “This is Dayton” is trying to change the perception of Dayton – for those that live and those that visit here. One of the five DaytonCREATE initiatives, they plan to start by plastering downtown with large, vibrant posters of cool people that already do cool things in Dayton in time for Friday’s Urban Nights. This first series of posters Celebrate Daytonians, with a focus on the “Creative Class & Urban Adventurers.”

You can check out more of the posters downtown tonight, or at DaytonCreate.org
